Vegas Book Marketing:Journey Day 1

By Darby-Lee Dominique

I have decided to write about the extra dimensions that the new authors in today’s society must be aware. Self-publishing has opened up a brand-new arena for people to have a voice, myself included. The problem becomes apparent that if you are going to be an author and self-publish you also have to be aware of marketing your material.  I always knew this would be an aspect of my future life; for these reasons, I set up several forums for me to utilize when I decided that the time was right.

With this in mind, I am getting closer to doing more than a little bit of publishing. So now part of my daily schedule will be marketing. I thought it would be interesting to write about my experiences.

1st step: Pick some marketing Strategies to start my education. I thought while polishing some sections of the book; I could learn what would be needed to set up this up right.

It took awhile, but I found one that promoted hard work and (here is the important part) did not promise a quick fix. Instead, it pushed daily activities that will help you grow your new business.

That is what the new age of self-publishers need to know. Good material is the backbone; Suitable marketing will put it into the hands of the reader.

2nd Step: Follow the steps given, in the order. In the beginning, you get to choose your level of expertise, stick with what you have chosen and the order. I selected the very beginning level. I probably have more computer and web page knowledge than most, but this is marketing to a particular genre. I do not know how to make my time and investments definitive enough to put my book in the hands of the right readers that will enjoy it.

Writing is Hard Work

By Darby Lee-Dominique

I know that this post will be preaching to the choir, I have been writing if not daily then certainly weekly.  I have found that the hardest thing I have to do and understand is the organization, once there is a certain number of words on the page you can lose track of where the story is going. I certainly can appreciate my beginning writing courses from back in the day, where the outline was crucial. I recently had to go back and reevaluate the framework process and how it relates to my personal writing tools. I did this to help organize productivity in my stories. I’m not sure whether I am complaining or looking for a pat on the back. I finally think I’ve managed to organize/or accomplish the progression of my story with my outline template. What surprised me was that I wasn’t that far off. I just needed to flush out a few spots and connect to the ending. I’m almost finished with the whole first story. Even if I put it out in installments or all together I have a sense of accomplishment. I would never have put out the first little bit if I had not needed to understand how to work the self-publishing business, however now that I understand that process to some degree, I have found my organizational tools.  I am hoping to stay ahead of that little bit more in the future.  I will certainly use my template for future stories.

The Year of Milestones

BabyEvery life on the planet, goes through a cycle. This includes human beings, more specifically women. You start out life as a baby progressing through a complex cycle of growth with a dash of hormones, where your life revolves around what you want and what your parents want for you. You encounter a multitude of life lessons which lead you to hopefully becoming a mother yourself, this was my journey.

When you become a mother you realize that the center of the universe is not you, it is them.  Your goal from then on is to make sure they are happy, healthy and become productive members of society. I have been very blessed with my children and the adults they have grown up to be. This particular year will see my daughter graduating from a four-year college, my son has given me one grandchild with another one on the way, as well as a new member of our family my wonderful daughter-in-law.

At some point or another you realize that you have passed the halfway mark for your life. You begin to look back and wonder what have I accomplished, what will I accomplish? I suggest that whether or not you have contributed  something that you would consider life altering for humanity you look around and see if you have created a warm safe environment to help the next generation. Because this is a life altering event, when you create that environment for your children, they will create that environment for their children.

In the words of the immortal lion King from Disney, it’s the circle of life.

Christmas is a time for family, which is what I have been doing.  Lots of food and time to share, I am off on vacation with the grand babies for the next week. The real world interrupting my imaginary world, I am hoping to have some time to polish and put out my next section for Piper’s Story in  “Vegas Captive”.  Thank you to all who have read and enjoyed my first foray into the published arena, Part 2 is almost here.

My Viking Universe

I am in a serious creative time, the universe in my head is expanding so much I am having trouble getting all the pieces out fast enough. I am now wondering how authors are able to keep it organized and consise. I feel like I could spend all my waking hours working on it and not touch the surface of all the stories and branches of plot lines. Its like I have let some massive beast out and it is consuming all my thoughts at any time my brain can squeeze away from real life. I appreciate all the kind words and thoughts for the little piece I published already, be patient there will be more, believe me. I will spend some time getting it edited and paced.

Where Have I Been?

I have been consumed with my day job lately which unfortunately in this time of my life is not writing, however I have put pen to paper or fingers to computer and produced about 5000 new words this weekend. I feel re-energized, I have not put out a date for my next section yet but I feel it will be done by Christmas. Since this is my first foray into the literary world I’m beginning to realize I need some self-discipline and repetition. A plan to accomplish a word count every day, new material, not editing or revising. I must make my writing time a personal goal, and keep the commitment. I have neglected it lately and I have discovered I need to feed that side of my personality, who knew that my new universe would be so determined to be heard.

Vegas Captive: First Month Sales

I have been astonished at the reception my story is receiving, the  joy at watching my characters come to life and explore the world is limitless. Currently  I am working on the next installment, it will be finished hopefully in the next 30 days.

My understanding all the media and publishing world is still in its newborn stage. It was a little over whelming combined with my real life and job while still finding the time to edit and write, so it took a backseat, hopefully in the future I can keep up.

Looking at my first sales report I felt the need from days of long ago to frame my first dollar, however time has marched on and my first dollar  is in the digital world. It is not as impressive as a dollar or a first check. The sales report is in Excel and lacks something to hang on a wall. Maybe a Scrape Booker could do something to pretty it up, only I am not one of those. I will think of something to make it a worth while Mile Stone for my wall. Till then I will try to keep you updated in a timely manner. Please feel free to check out my book.
