Stephen King’s The Mist TV adaptation replaces monsters with insects and religious fanatics

By Shannon Liao

Back in 2007, Stephen King’s 1980 novella The Mist was adapted as a film starring Thomas Jane and a lot of gigantic spiders, plus all sorts of creepy-crawly giant creatures seizing humans and biting their heads off. Ten years later, The Mist has become a Spike TV series. The adaptation is still about group-think, and it’s still a horror show. But that’s about all that’s remained the same.

Spoilers for The Mist and Moby Dick ahead.

Everything else has changed. Mrs. Carmody (Mary Bacon), the central human villain in the novella and film, is killed off early on in the series, like some sad extra the showrunners couldn’t be bothered with. And most surprisingly for fans of the film, five episodes into a 10-episode season, there have still…

HTC is launching an all-in-one Vive headset just for China

By Adi Robertson

HTC is partnering with Qualcomm for a self-contained Vive virtual reality headset exclusive to the Chinese market. The headset, called the Vive Standalone, is billed as a “premium” device and will run apps from HTC’s Viveport platform. It’s powered by a Snapdragon 835 chip and is based on Qualcomm’s all-in-one reference design, which includes inside-out positional tracking that would put it in the company of high-end tethered headsets.

We don’t know how much the Vive Standalone will cost, its exact technical specs, how people will interact with it, or when it’s coming out. HTC will supposedly be releasing that information in the coming months, after today’s reveal at the ChinaJoy entertainment expo. It’s a separate product from the…

Niantic CEO blames cellular data congestion for Pokémon Go Fest issues

By Nick Statt

Niantic CEO John Hanke, the man in charge of the mobile app maker behind Pokémon Go, reflected on the company’s rather disastrous real-world meet-up this past weekend, writing in a blog post published today that he and his team are sorry for the issues and taking the time to detail exactly what went wrong. According to Hanke, it was not so much the lack of preparation on Niantic’s part that plagued the very first Pokémon Go Fest in Chicago — though he readily admits to it being a learning experience — but an unforeseen level of cellular data congestion that overloaded mobile network providers and made the game unplayable for a vast number of attendees.

“Technical issues with our game software caused client crashes and interfered with…

AT&T–Time Warner merger reportedly moving forward at Justice Department

By Jacob Kastrenakes

It’s been nine months since AT&T announced a deal to buy Time Warner — the media company that owns HBO and Warner Bros. — for more than $80 billion, and it’s starting to look like regulatory review of the deal is moving toward a conclusion and eventual approval.

Bloomberg reported this morning that the US Justice Department is beginning to explore what conditions could be placed on the combined company to remedy some anti-competitive concerns. The department’s exploration of merger conditions suggests that the agency is leaning toward an approval of the deal. However, Bloomberg describes the discussions as being in an early stage, suggesting a decision isn’t imminent.

The report…

The First and Twelfth Doctors team up in this Doctor Who Christmas special trailer

By Kwame Opam

Peter Capaldi is on his way out as the Twelfth Doctor, but he has one more adventure before his inevitable regeneration. At Comic-Con today, BBC unveiled the trailer for this year’s upcoming Christmas special. The Twelfth Doctor will meet the First Doctor (Game of Thrones alum David Bradley), and the pair will try to fix time itself — with a little help from the Doctor’s newest companion, Bill (Pearl Mackie).

Today’s Comic-Con panel was a chance for fans to say goodbye to Capaldi, who’s served as the Doctor for the last three seasons. Leaving with him is showrunner Steven Moffat, who’s handing the reins off to Broadchurch showrunner Chris Chibnall. All this paves the way for Jodie Whittaker to come aboard as the Thirteenth Doctor, the…
