Former Google employee files lawsuit alleging the company fired him over pro-diversity posts

By Shannon Liao

A former Google engineer is suing the company for discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and wrongful termination, according to court documents filed today. Tim Chevalier, a software developer and former site-reliability engineer at Google, claims that Google fired him when he responded with internal posts and memes to racist and sexist encounters within the company and the general response to the now-infamous James Damore memo. News of Chevalier’s lawsuit was reported earlier today by Gizmodo.

Chevalier said in a statement to The Verge, “It is a cruel irony that Google attempted to justify firing me by claiming that my social networking posts showed bias against my harassers.” Chevalier, who is also disabled and transgender, alleges…

Porsche is getting out of the diesel business before building more plug-ins

By Zac Estrada

Porsche hasn’t shied away from making a big push for electrification in its future lineup, even significantly boosting its investment in the full EVs and plug-in hybrids. But one type of propulsion may be running on borrowed time at the German automaker.

Porsche has stopped production of cars with diesel engines, according to Autocar. The UK-based automotive publication reported Tuesday all models equipped with diesel engines have been dropped following an emissions compliance issue for European markets. Instead of modifying the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine in the Macan SUV, the company has decided to stop offering it altogether. The engine was also used in the Panamera hatchback and Sport Turismo wagon.

Hackers have turned the Nintendo Switch into a functional Linux tablet

By Paul Miller

There are two major reasons I can think of to hack a game console. The first one is obvious: so you can play cracked copies of games. That’s why modern consoles are so difficult to hack, because millions of dollars are on the line.

But some people just want to run any software they choose on the hardware they own. And for those people, Linux on the Switch is a huge achievement.

A couple of weeks ago, the fail0verflow hacking collective showed a still image on Twitter of a Nintendo Switch booting Linux. They’re one of a small handful of hacker teams who are teasing exploits of the Nvidia Tegra hardware inside the Switch.

But now fail0verflow has video of a full-on Linux distro running on the hacked Switch, complete with touchscreen…

Final Fantasy XV’s mobile version is a perfect introduction to the series

By Megan Farokhmanesh

Square Enix has done an enormous amount of work over the last decade to turn Final Fantasy XV into more than just the latest game in the series. It’s been a spectacle: first announced as a spinoff of Final Fantasy XIII, it later rebranded as a new entry entirely. An entire event was planned around its release date reveal. Its story has been padded and polished with supplementary movies starring Game of Thrones actors and anime. And though the game launched in 2016, Square Enix continues to release content for it, in the form of new story episodes and even a multiplayer mode.

That’s part of what makes Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition — not a straight port of the game, but not quite a remake either — less peculiar than it sounds. The mobile…

Facebook will mail out postcards to verify US election advertisers

By Chris Welch

Facebook plans to mail out verification postcards through the US postal service to anyone purchasing ads related to US elections, according to Reuters. The postcards will contain a special code that advertisers must provide back to Facebook to prove they’re in the United States.

This new verification system will be required for all advertising that mentions a specific candidate running for a federal office — such as the presidency. It will be implemented in time for the mid-term elections this coming November.

“If you run an ad mentioning a candidate, we are going to mail you a postcard and you will have to use that code to prove you are in the United States,” Katie Harbath, Facebook’s global director of policy programs, said on…
