Netflix is bringing The Punisher back for a second season

By Bryan Bishop

The first season of Netflix’s The Punisher arrived at an awkward time in America’s history with gun violence, but that isn’t stopping the streaming service from bringing it back for a second season. Netflix made the announcement today in a post on the show’s Facebook page, simply noting that “Season 2 is coming.” The Marvel series follows Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), who takes the law into his own hands — along with a whole lot of guns.

Almost as an unintended contrast to the news about the psychopathic anti-hero, Netflix also announced today that it has ordered six new original series from DreamWorks Animation Television. The titles range in subject matter, from Trolls: The Beat Goes On!, a sequel series to the 2016 feature film, to The…

Atari plans to open preorders for its Ataribox home console this Thursday

By Nick Statt

Preorders for the Ataribox, the classic game company’s take on a NES Classic retro console, are slated to go live this Thursday, according to a report from CNET citing an email from Atari sent out today to interested consumers. The Ataribox was first teased back at E3 in June and then in a more formal unveiling in July, in which the Atari 2600-inspired PC was shown in two customization options: a wood-like finish or a more modern and sleek black and red look.

The device will have a custom AMD processor and run Linux, making it capable of playing both classic Atari games and mid-tier PC titles. Atari expects to sell the device for between $250 and $300. The company originally planned to sell it through an Indiegogo campaign, but it’s…

Connected safe maker Vaultek issues security update after researchers discover Bluetooth vulnerability

By Andrew Liptak

Vaultek is a company that manufactures Bluetooth-connected safes for valuables and firearms — things that you really want to make sure are secured. When we came across one of their products on Indiegogo last year, we noted that crowdsourced Internet of Things devices have a troubling history of being insecure. Recently, security firm Two Six Labs picked up one of Vaultek’s connected safes, and demonstrated that it can easily be cracked open.

The security company tested out a Vaultek VT20i safe, which owners can lock with a PIN and pair with an Android App. The app uses a pairing code that is the same as the PIN, and allows an unlimited number of attempts to get in. The lab was able to write a program to use brute force to guess the…

Jessica Jones’ second season gets its first teaser

By Andrew Liptak

When we last saw Jessica Jones in Netflix’s The Defenders, she escaped from the destruction of Midland Circle along with Luke Cage and Danny Rand, who all look to move on with their lives after stopping The Hand. Netflix debuted the first trailer for the next season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones, showing that while Jones is trying to move on, her past is catching up to her.

In the teaser, we see that Jones is back to working as a private investigator, musing that people have their secrets, or at least someone else’s. It seems that there’s still some surprises in her past: her friend Trish telling her that knowing what was done to her might be helpful. Jones isn’t sold on the idea, asking “what if facing it makes me worse?” Along the way,…

Google brings play and pause buttons back to the Home Mini

By Jacob Kastrenakes

Google is bringing play and pause buttons back to the Home Mini today, after initially removing them due to an issue that could cause the device to constantly record users.

Instead of tapping the top of the Home Mini to start and stop playback as had been originally planned, owners will now be able to long press the volume buttons on either side of the device to control whatever’s playing. That extends to music, news, alarms, phone calls, and so on. If it’s playing, you’ll be able to press and hold to stop it — which can be a lot more convenient than using your voice if you’re already right beside the device.

The update will roll out to Home Mini units that are enrolled in Google’s software p…
